However, just by talking to someone they might be able to tell you your achievements and skills - they might not be so obvious to you. You can use software at school or in a Connexions Access Point to help you.

Making applications

Once you have decided on a 6th form, college training course or job, it is likely that you will have to make an application. You can have to write or telephone for further details, complete an application form or send your CV.
Tips for completing CV

  • Take time putting your CV together, don't do it in a hurry.
  • Be brief and to the point - not more than two pages.
  • Word process your CV and send a covering letter, explaining your reasons for applying.
  • Keep a copy of the CV for future reference.

Tips for applying by telephone

  • Decide who you need to speak to, if you do not have a name ask for the personnel department or for school or student enquiries.
  • Write down everything you want to ask, it's easy to forget if you don't.
  • Have a pen and notepaper by the phone so that you can make notes.
  • Have enough change or credit on your phone card if you are calling from a public area; make sure your battery is fully charged if using a mobile phone.
  • Thank the person at the end of the conversation.

Tips for applying by letter or email

  • Do the letter in rough first and then write down clearly or word process the letter.
  • If you are applying to an advert, do what it asks; always reply by the closing date.
  • Letters to Dear Sir or Madam end with Yours faithfully and letters to a named person end with Yours sincerely.
  • Print your name clearly under your signature.
  • Keep a copy for reference.
