Online/Distance Learning Study Tips

As with all training packages, you must carefully analyse whether distance learning is right for you.  Before embarking on any distance learning, be certain that you do not require face-to-face, instructor-led training, especially if you are looking to boost your career.  Suitable distance learning has great benefits.  The following tips will help you get the most out of your experience.

1.)    Commit the time

How much time you will need to commit to your course to achieve your goals?  Break the time into modules per course and be prepared to commit between 4 to 15 hours a week.

2.)    Invest in the equipment

You will save time and heartache if you have at least the minimum technical requirements for the course.  Have you adequate modem speed and memory at home or work?  Will you need broadband?  Hands-free phone?  A fax machine?  Scanner?

3.)    Avoid distractions

The conveniences of home study can quickly become the greatest distraction.  Find a quiet place to work and set rules for the family.  No interruptions must mean that.  An hour with the TV can quickly turn into a night.

4.)    Keep consistent

Maintain a regular daily schedule.  Habit creates momentum.  If possible, designate a regular place to work so you can be ready to pick up as soon as it’s time to start.

5.)    Keep up-to-date with the course

Frequently check in with staff, schedules, postings, messages, discussions, websites and other students.  Be aware of changing course schedules, deadlines, etc.

6.)    Establish weekly goals

It is very easy to slip behind if you let the weeks pass by especially with practical work.  Don’t pressure yourself with an untouched mountain of work and looming deadlines.  Completing manageable amounts at regular intervals is the most effective way to learn.

7.)    Get to know the website

Log on frequently.  Being familiar with the website will allow you to find what you need as quickly as possible.

8.)    Learn how you learn

Are you a night owl or an early bird?  Do you prefer discussion groups, reading alone or writing a report?  Distance learning should be adaptable to your learning style.  The more aware you are of your strengths, the easier you can adapt and maximise the course to your needs.

9.)    Maintain classroom etiquette

Conduct yourself as you would in any classroom, even if you’re perched on the breakfast bar. Maintain professionalism through online conferences, discussion groups, etc.  Speak and act as you would face-to-face.

10.)  Participate

Full participation will enrich the experience.  Be active in discussions even if you normally hide at the back of the classroom.  Volunteer, respond, have a go!  We learn by mistakes.  Don’t miss out on interactions with other students just because you’re not in a classroom.  Visit chat rooms and set up email links.  A solid course buddy can be your best tool.
