Part Time Employment

At least 28% of students in FE and HE have part-time jobs to supplement their income and a well-chosen job can provide excellent experience. You may choose to complete work in the day (when you are not in college or university), evening or at the weekend, but you need to ensure you have enough time for your studies.

It is worth noting that employers look at any employment as an asset and most companies look to employ people with previous communication, motivation, problem solving, planning, organisational and IT skills. Part-time work will provide a background understanding of these skills.

How can I find part time work?

  • Go to your local Connexions Access Point or your school / college careers service and look at the opportunities.
  • Does your college or university have a job shop or schemes for work experience? Speak to your tutors.
  • Local newspapers  are great for part-time jobs as is yout local job centre who also advertise on http://www.jobcentreplus.co.uk
  • Be proactive and speak to employers and ask if there are any vacancies.
  • Target the sectors that you are interested in working in. The Yellow Pages will provide an ideal start, and don't forget shop windows.
  • Volunteer in a company to get in the door and then make yourself indispensable. If you prove yourself, they may offer you a paid position.
  • Try to catch opportunities before they go public – speak to people already working there, as usually companies advertise internally first.
